The trip costs $4,436.26 per person for five days, and both habituation permits are included, so the price you see is the real total. You spend four hours or more with a semi-habituated gorilla group in Bwindi and from four hours to a full day with chimpanzees in Kibale. The trip is private, starts and ends in Kampala or Entebbe, and covers four nights with all meals. The deciding constraint is fitness and age: the listing asks for at least moderate fitness and sets the minimum age at 18.

This Private 5-Day Gorilla and Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Uganda is the deep version of primate trekking. It costs $4,436.26 per person, runs for five days and includes both habituation permits: the gorilla habituation permit in Bwindi and the chimpanzee habituation permit in Kibale. Instead of the standard single hour with the animals, you get four hours or more with a gorilla group still being habituated, and from four hours to a full day with the chimps. The trip is private, with your own driver-guide, four nights at Kibale Forest Camp and Buhoma Community Rest Camp, and all meals. It starts and ends in Kampala or Entebbe. It suits travellers who want maximum time with the primates and do not mind paying roughly double the price of a standard trek. One honest edge: it is the only listing on this site with both habituation permits included, and it is a new listing with no reviews yet. Compare it against every other option on gorilla trekking in Uganda before you commit.

The Trip, Stage by Stage

Five days, two forests, two habituation experiences. The days are long, the drives between them longer, and both permits are already paid for inside the price.

  1. Day 1

Kampala to Kibale, Bigodi swamp walk

Breakfast at 6:00 am and a 6:30 am departure with your driver-guide. Stop in Fort Portal for lunch, continue to Kibale Forest Camp and check in, then transfer to the Bigodi swamp for a guided nature walk spotting birds and monkeys before returning to the lodge for the night.

  2. Day 2

    Chimpanzee habituation in Kibale

Early breakfast at 6:00 am, then to the park offices for the ranger briefing with a packed lunch. You enter the forest by 8:00 am and stay with the chimpanzees for four hours to a full day, watching how they interact and photographing them. Look out too for red colobus, vervet monkeys and African forest elephants. Back to Kibale Forest Camp for the night.

  3. Day 3

    Transfer to Bwindi

Wake to a cup of tea or coffee and set off for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with lunch en route. Arrival is late in the afternoon at Buhoma Community Rest Camp, where you check in, have dinner and rest before the gorilla day.

  4. Day 4

    Gorilla habituation in Buhoma

Breakfast at 6:00 am, pick up your packed lunch and transfer to the park offices for the briefing. By 8:00 am you are in the forest with the habituation team, spending four or more hours with a gorilla group still being habituated, photographing them and learning their behaviour. You return to the lodge late in the afternoon.

  5. Day 5

    Back to Kampala or Entebbe

After breakfast, check out and start the long drive back. Lunch in Mbarara, then a stop at the Uganda Equator for photos and gifts, and drop-off at your chosen destination in Kampala or Entebbe.

What the $4,436.26 Price Covers

The $4,436.26 covers the whole five-day package: private transport with an English-speaking driver-guide, four nights' accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner, bottled water, the Bigodi swamp walk, the Batwa cultural experience, airport pickup and drop-off, and both habituation permits. The permit line matters most. A gorilla habituation permit alone costs $1,500 for foreign non-residents until the end of 2026, so nearly a third of the trip price is that single paper.

Here is the full split.

What Habituation Is and How It Differs

Habituation is the slow process of getting a wild gorilla or chimpanzee family used to human presence. Rangers and researchers visit the animals day after day until they tolerate people close by. A habituation experience lets you join that process, walking with the team as they follow a group that is not yet fully open to tourism.

Four hours versus one hour

The difference from a standard trek is time. On a normal Uganda gorilla trek your permit buys one hour with a fully habituated group, and visits are limited to one hour per gorilla group per day. On this habituation experience the listing gives you four hours or more with the gorillas, and from four hours to a full day with the chimpanzees.

You watch feeding, grooming and family interactions unfold instead of catching a single scene.

Why it costs more

The gorilla habituation permit costs $1,500 for foreign non-residents, close to double the $800 standard trekking permit. You are paying for the extra hours and for a role in the research work. A standard permit includes the guide fee, park entrance for the day and the community development contribution.

Chimpanzee Habituation in Kibale

Day 2 is the chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale National Park. After a 6:00 am breakfast you transfer to the park offices for a ranger briefing with your packed lunch, and you start in the forest by 8:00 am. The experience runs from four hours to a full day, following the chimps as they move, feed and interact.

What you see besides chimps

Kibale's forest carries more than chimpanzees. The listing names red colobus, vervet monkeys and African forest elephants among the other animals you may come across. Bring a camera with a decent zoom, since the chimps stay in the canopy as often as on the ground.

  • Hiking boots with good grip
  • Long trousers and a rain jacket
  • Garden gloves for gripping vines and nettles
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen
  • Water and your packed lunch or snacks

The chimpanzee habituation permit is included in the trip price. For context, standard chimpanzee tracking in Kibale costs $250 for foreign non-residents until the end of 2026, rising to $300 from 1 January 2027, and habituation rises to $400 on the same date.

Gorilla Habituation in Buhoma

Day 4 is the gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, working from the Buhoma trailhead in the north, the park headquarters sector. You wake at 6:00 am, collect a packed lunch and transfer to the park offices for the ranger briefing. By 8:00 am you are in the forest with the habituation team, and you stay with the gorillas for four hours or more, photographing them and learning their behaviour before returning to the lodge late in the afternoon.

The rules on the day

The same rules apply as on a standard trek. Keep 10 m (32.8 ft) from the gorillas, do not eat, drink or smoke near them, and never use flash photography. Do not go out if you have a cold or any infectious illness, because gorillas are vulnerable to human respiratory infections.

The listing also warns against the trip for travellers with spinal injuries, pregnant travellers and anyone with poor cardiovascular health.

Where you are

Bwindi covers 321 km2 between 1,160 m and 2,607 m above sea level and protects roughly 459 mountain gorillas, almost half of the world's remaining population. The park has 25 habituated groups and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kampala to Buhoma runs about 390 km of tarmac to Rukungiri and then 82 km of winding murram road, which is why day 3 is a full transfer day.

Where the Habituation Happens

Gorilla habituation on this trip runs from Buhoma, in northern Bwindi.

The Habituation Permit Price Rise in 2027

Book before the tariff changes and you save real money on a return trip. From 1 January 2027 the gorilla habituation permit rises from $1,500 to $1,800 for foreign non-residents. Standard gorilla tracking stays at $800.

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale rises from $250 to $300, and chimpanzee habituation from its current level to $400.

What that does to this trip's price

Both habituation permits are included here, so the operator is absorbing the current $1,500 gorilla permit inside the $4,436.26. A trip booked after the rise would carry roughly $300 more of permit cost per person. Since 1 March 2026, UWA no longer holds unpaid permit reservations for seven days: a permit is secured only on full payment at the time of booking, and permits for foreign non-residents can only be booked through licensed tour operators.

Who This Trip Suits

This is a trip for people who have possibly already done the standard trek, or who know they want the full research-style day rather than a single hour. It demands two long forest days back to back, on steep, muddy and slippery trails at altitude, so the listing asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness.

Age and health limits

The listing sets the minimum age at 18, higher than the UWA minimum of 15 for gorilla tracking, and the booking window runs from 18 to 80. It is not recommended for travellers with spinal injuries, pregnant travellers or anyone with poor cardiovascular health.

Best seasons

Rain can fall in any month in Bwindi. The drier spells are roughly June to September and December to February. March to May and October to November are wetter, with April and May the wettest, which is why UWA discounts low season permits in April, May and November.

Book early either way, since permits are secured only on full payment and the four-hour or longer habituation slots are limited.

How It Compares

At $4,436.26 this is the most expensive listing on the site, and it is the only one with the gorilla habituation permit included. The nearest like-for-like trip is the 5-day gorilla and chimpanzee itinerary with standard tracking, which costs about $2,000 less. If a one-hour encounter with the gorillas is enough for you, the 3-day and 2-day trips cost a fraction of this price.

The table sets this listing against the closest alternatives in the catalog on price, length and boat type. Figures current for Q4 2026.

One honest note on the trade-off. This listing is new and has no reviews yet, while the trips above carry ratings from dozens to hundreds of travellers. The price is the highest, but it buys the most time in the forest of any listing here, and both permits are locked in before the 2027 rise.

Questions About the 5-Day Gorilla Habituation

How strenuous is gorilla trekking in Uganda?

It is moderately to highly strenuous. Trekking time varies with where the gorilla family is that morning, with listings quoting 1 to 6 hours of walking on steep, muddy and slippery trails. This habituation trip asks for at least a moderate level of fitness, since the forest day runs four hours or more.

What is the gorilla habituation experience in Uganda?

It is a full day with researchers and rangers following a gorilla group that is not yet fully habituated to humans. You spend four hours or more with the animals instead of the one hour allowed on a standard trek. It runs in Bwindi and the permit costs $1,500 for foreign non-residents.

Is gorilla trekking in Uganda safe?

Yes, treks run with armed rangers and trained guides from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and groups are limited in size. You must keep 10 m from the gorillas and follow the briefing rules. The main risks on the day are the terrain, so sturdy boots and a steady step matter more than anything else.

How long do you spend with gorillas on a habituation experience?

Four hours or more, against a strict one hour on a standard trek. On this trip the gorilla day runs from the 8:00 am start in the forest until you return to the lodge late in the afternoon. The chimpanzee habituation day in Kibale runs from four hours to a full day.

How much is the gorilla habituation permit?

It costs $1,500 per person for foreign non-residents until the end of 2026. From 1 January 2027 it rises to $1,800. A standard gorilla trekking permit costs $800, so habituation costs close to double. Details are in the Uganda gorilla permit guide.

What is the minimum age for the habituation trip?

The listing sets the minimum age at 18, with a booking window from 18 to 80. That is stricter than the official UWA minimum of 15 for gorilla tracking, which applies to standard treks on other trips in this catalogue.

Is gorilla habituation better than regular trekking?

Better depends on what you want. Habituation gives you four hours or more with the gorillas and a research role, but costs $1,500 against $800 for the standard permit, and this whole five-day trip comes in at $4,436.26. If one hour is enough, the 5-Day Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda: Kibale, Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi delivers a similar route for $2,350.
