Gorilla Trekking in Uganda from Kigali: Routes, Border and Timing

The main way to do gorilla trekking from Kigali to Uganda is by road through the Cyanika border, a 3 to 4 hour transfer to Bwindi's southern sectors. A one-day trek starts from $300 per person plus the $800 Uganda permit, and a two-day trip with the permit inside costs $1,750.

Quick answer Kigali to Bwindi in 3-4 hours by road via the Cyanika border

Kigali is the fastest gateway to Uganda's gorillas. A road transfer through the Cyanika border reaches Bwindi's southern sectors in 3 to 4 hours, against roughly 9 hours from Kampala to Kisoro. One-day treks from Kigali start at $300 plus the $800 permit and the $50 Uganda visa.

Key takeaways

How do you get from Kigali to Uganda's gorilla parks?

Almost every traveller goes by road through the Cyanika border to the southern Bwindi sectors or Mgahinga, because the drive is 3 to 4 hours against about 9 hours from Kampala.

Kigali sits far closer to Uganda's gorilla parks than Uganda's own capital. Many travellers for Uganda's southern sectors now fly into Kigali because the drive is shorter. Here are the ways in.

Every way from Kigali to the gorillas

Road via Cyanika is the default. The Kigali to Bwindi drive is at least 4 hours each way. Mgahinga is even closer, since the town of Kisoro sits just past the same border. Flying is not a Kigali option, as the scheduled light aircraft flights to Bwindi's airstrips run from Entebbe, not Kigali.

Pick the border and sector together. Cyanika, near Kisoro, serves Rushaga, Nkuringo and Mgahinga. Katuna, near Kabale, serves Ruhija and Buhoma. Match the crossing to permit availability at booking time.

Which border do you cross from Kigali to Bwindi?

You cross either Cyanika for the southern sectors and Mgahinga or Katuna for the eastern and northern sectors, and you need a Uganda tourist visa applied for online at $50.

Rwanda and Uganda share two land crossings on the Kigali to Bwindi corridor. Documents are simple but must be arranged before you travel.

Visas and what happens at the crossing

A single-entry Uganda tourist visa costs $50 and is applied for online through Uganda Immigration. If you plan to also visit Rwanda on the same trip, ask your operator about the East African tourist visa, which covers several partner states, though the facts here confirm the $50 single-entry Uganda visa.

At the border you leave Rwanda, walk or drive across no-man's-land, and clear Ugandan immigration with your passport and printed visa. Trekkers then continue to Kisoro for Mgahinga, or on the winding 35 km road from Kisoro to Nkuringo or Rushaga, which takes 1 to 1.5 hours.

Can you trek gorillas in Uganda in one day from Kigali?

Yes, two one-day treks run from Kigali, one to Bwindi and one to Mgahinga, and both are long days starting before dawn.

A one-day trek works because the border is close. It is still roughly a 20-hour door-to-door day for Bwindi, so it suits travellers with no spare day.

The two one-day options

The 1-Day Bwindi Gorilla Tour from Kigali costs $300 per person, permit extra, with a 2 am pickup and return around 8-9 pm. It holds a 4.8 rating from 18 reviews. The From Kigali: 1-Day Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga, Uganda (Permit Extra) costs $400 per person with a 3 am pickup, rated 4.9 from 26 reviews.

Add the $800 Uganda permit and the $50 visa to either price. On the Bwindi day trip the real total is about $1,100, or $1,150 with the visa.0 rating, so the listing price alone always hides the permit.

The day plan is tight because you get one hour with the gorilla family after locating it, and treks themselves last 2 to 7 hours. Arrive at the border and trailhead with time in hand.

How much does gorilla trekking from Kigali to Uganda cost?

Listings run from $300 for a one-day trek without the permit to $2,600 for a fully inclusive three-day trip, and the permit inside every honest total is $800 per person.

Permit-inclusive and permit-extra listings sit side by side, so compare totals. Here is the full picture.

Totals compared, permit counted

The cheapest three-day total comes from the 3-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Tour from Entebbe or Kigali (Permit Extra), which lists at $503 and comes to $1,303 once the $800 permit is added. The From Kigali: 2-Day Gorilla Trek in Bwindi (Permit Extra) lists at $498 and totals $1,298, with 24-hour free cancellation. The 1-Day Bwindi Gorilla Tour from Kigali shows $300 but totals $1,100, or $1,150 with the $50 visa.

An independent operator, Gorilla Expeditions, sells its own 3-day Uganda gorilla trek from Kigali at 700 USD with the permit included, which shows how widely package prices move.Check cancellation terms, since the 2-day permit-included trip is non-refundable.

How much does it cost to trek with gorillas in Uganda?

A Uganda gorilla permit costs $800 for foreign non-residents, or $600 in the low season months of April, May and November, against $1,500 in Rwanda.

The permit is the single biggest line in the budget and the fee listings most often hide. It buys one hour with one habituated group, in a group of no more than eight visitors.

What the permit includes and how to book

The $800 permit includes the guide fee, park entrance for the day and the community development contribution. It does not cover transport, accommodation, porter fees or tips. Permits for foreign non-residents can only be booked through licensed tour operators, and a permit is secured only on full payment at the time of booking. UWA no longer holds unpaid reservations for seven days.

Each gorilla family is visited by only eight people per day, and booking three to six months ahead is recommended for the June to September and December to February dry seasons. Uganda has 19 habituated gorilla groups, 18 in Bwindi and one in Mgahinga. Budget extra for a porter at UGX 40,000, paid locally in cash.

What does a 3-day Kigali to Bwindi itinerary look like?

A standard three-day trip drives from Kigali across Cyanika on day one, treks on day two and returns via Lake Bunyonyi or direct on day three.

Three days is the comfortable shape for a Kigali start. It turns a 20-hour single day into a relaxed loop with a rest stop.

The three-day template

Day 1 is the 3-4 hour transfer from Kigali through Cyanika to Bwindi's southern sector, with the afternoon free or spent on community trails. Day 2 is the trek itself, 2 to 7 hours in the forest and one hour with the gorilla family, followed by a certificate. Day 3 returns to Kigali, often with a stop, as one operator's version ends day 2 at Lake Bunyonyi with canoeing before the drive back.

Our own 3-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trek with the Batwa Trail and a Lake Bunyonyi Canoe Ride follows exactly this shape at $2,600 per person, with the $800 permit, two nights, every meal and the Batwa community trail inside. It is the most reviewed Uganda gorilla trek on either platform, with 236 reviews and a 5.0 rating. If you want more than one hour with the gorillas, a 3-day Bwindi gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga gives 4 hours of gorilla watching.

DayPlan
Day 1Kigali to Cyanika border, 3-4 hour transfer, overnight near Rushaga or Nkuringo
Day 2Gorilla trek, 2-7 hours with 1 hour at the family, then Lake Bunyonyi or lodge
Day 3Batwa trail or canoe ride, return to Kigali

Is it better to do gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda?

Uganda wins on price with an $800 permit against Rwanda's $1,500, while Rwanda wins on drive time to Volcanoes National Park from Kigali, about 100 km on tarmac.

The two parks sit in the same ecosystem, and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park and Uganda's Mgahinga are part of the same gorilla range, with troops crossing the unfenced border.

How the two countries compare

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is more expensive than in Uganda, covering permits, accommodation and services. Rwanda counters with Kinigi headquarters only about 100 km from Kigali on tarmac, making a two-night Rwanda safari realistic. Uganda offers far more choice, with 25 habituated groups in Bwindi across four sectors and roughly 459 mountain gorillas, almost half the world's population.

Traveller reviews confirm planning communication and tour quality for both countries. Use Kigali as your airport and Uganda as your park, which is exactly what the southern Bwindi route does.

Longer Trips From Kigali

Three days or more, with the permit and extras built in.

Which month is best for gorilla trekking in Uganda?

The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are the most popular, and permits should be booked three to six months ahead, while low season permits at $600 run in April, May and November.

Timing changes both the trail conditions and the price of the permit itself.

Seasons and lead time

Book three to six months ahead for the June to September and December to February dry seasons, since each gorilla family takes only eight visitors a day. In April, May and November the permit drops to $600 for foreign non-residents, and those low season permits cannot be rescheduled. Treks are still possible from October to December with fewer travellers.

Bwindi's trails are steep at 1,160 m to 2,607 m above sea level, so pack for rain in any month.

Is gorilla trekking dangerous?

Trekking is safe when run under the park rules, with rangers, a 10 m distance from the gorillas and a minimum age of 15 years.

The gorillas you visit are habituated and the visits are tightly controlled, so the risks are the forest itself rather than the animals.

The rules that keep visits safe

Visitors keep a 10 m distance from the gorillas, may not eat, drink or smoke during the tracking, and may not use flash photography. Do not visit with a cold or other infectious illness, because gorillas are vulnerable to human bugs. Rangers lead every group of eight.

If things go wrong the operator's fallback is clear: if a group moves out of the park, visitors get another chance or a refund, and a full day without contact earns a 75% refund under the Rwanda booking rules, with no refund for late arrival or cancellation.
