Where to Stay in Bwindi: Lodges by Sector

Bwindi Lodges are best chosen after your gorilla permit, because the permit fixes your trekking sector and the lodge needs to be near that trailhead. The four sectors are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, and Bwindi is home to more than half of the roughly 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild.

Quick answer The short answer on Bwindi lodges and sectors

Stay in the sector printed on your permit, because trekking starts at that sector's briefing point around 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning and rangers do not move you elsewhere. Buhoma suits first timers and fly-in trips, Ruhija suits birders, Rushaga has the most gorilla groups, and Nkuringo has the steepest trek.

Key takeaways

Why does my lodge need to match my gorilla permit sector?

A gorilla permit names one sector and the trek starts from that sector's briefing point, so a lodge in the wrong sector means a long pre-dawn drive or a missed trek.

This is the single rule that decides where to stay. Get it wrong and the whole trip is at risk.

The permit-first rule

Your permit names Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga or Nkuringo. On trek day you report to that sector's briefing point at around 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning. Rangers do not move you to another sector on the day. Permits run out before rooms do in the busy months, so secure the permit first and book the lodge second.

Driving between sectors is slow. Buhoma to Rushaga takes three hours or more on mountain roads, and Ruhija to Rushaga is not much quicker. One exception: Rushaga and Nkuringo are around 30 to 45 minutes apart, so lodges in Rubuguri between them can serve either sector.

The four sectors at a glance

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park covers 321 km2 between 1,160 m and 2,607 m above sea level and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It holds 25 habituated gorilla groups across the four trailheads.

Tours That Fit

These packages pair a Bwindi trek with lodges and transfers already arranged.

Which Bwindi lodges are in Buhoma?

Buhoma has luxury lodges close to the park headquarters, including Gorilla Forest Lodge and Buhoma Lodge, both walkable to the briefing point.

Buhoma is the original trekking base in the north and the easiest sector for a short stay.

Inside the gates

Gorilla Forest Lodge is the only luxury lodge inside the gates of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. It has 10 suites and reopened after a complete overhaul. The lodge provides gaiters, a backpack and walking sticks for treks, and guests get a post-trek picnic lunch and mud room boot cleaning.

Buhoma Lodge is one of only two lodges situated within the National Park, within short walking distance of the Buhoma tracking meeting point.

Why choose Buhoma

Buhoma suits first timers and fly-in safaris. Twice daily scheduled flights land at Kihihi airstrip, roughly 90 to 120 minutes' drive from Buhoma. By road, Buhoma is a full day's drive from Entebbe or Kampala.

Gorilla viewing success rates are over 90 percent and you get an hour with the gorillas once sighted. Overnighting in Bwindi the night before tracking is required, so Buhoma's proximity removes all transfer risk.

Where should birders stay in Bwindi?

Ruhija in the east suits birders, and its lodges put you at the trailhead without the long cross-park drives.

Ruhija sits at higher altitude and attracts travellers who come for the birds as much as the gorillas.

Ruhija in brief

The sector guide names Ruhija as the choice for birders. Lodge names for Ruhija are not stated in our sources, so ask your operator to match the lodge to your Ruhija permit. The 4-Day Double Mountain Gorilla Trekking Safari in Bwindi is a good fit if you want two treks from one base.

Which lodges serve Rushaga and Nkuringo?

Rushaga has the widest spread of lodges and the gorilla habituation experience, while top-rated names such as Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge and Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge serve the southern sectors.

The south has the most choice, and lodges in Rubuguri can serve both Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Rushaga

Rushaga has the most gorilla groups, the widest spread of lodges and the gorilla habituation experience. If you hold a habituation permit, plan a full day in the forest and choose a lodge within a short drive of the Rushaga briefing point. The Private 5-Day Gorilla and Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Uganda is built around that format.

Nkuringo and Rubuguri

Nkuringo has the steepest trek of the four sectors. Rushaga and Nkuringo are around 30 to 45 minutes apart, so lodges between them, in Rubuguri for example, can serve either sector. Traveller-ranked lodges in the park include Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge, Chameleon Hill Forest Lodge and Mahogany Springs.

Can I stay outside the park at Lake Mutanda, Kisoro or Lake Bunyonyi?

Yes, southern bases near Kisoro such as lakeside lodges work well for Rushaga and Nkuringo permits, since those sectors sit closest to Kisoro.

You do not have to sleep inside the forest to trek it comfortably.

Lake and town bases

Kisoro is the practical town base for the southern sectors, and lakeside stays around Lake Mutanda and Lake Bunyonyi add scenery between treks. Lake Bunyonyi is a popular add-on after the trek, as in the 3-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trek with the Batwa Trail and a Lake Bunyonyi Canoe Ride. Park entry beyond the trekking day costs $40 a day for foreign non-residents, per Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Note that a stay at Lake Bunyonyi is too far from the northern sectors for a comfortable trek-morning drive, so match the base to the permit.

How much do Bwindi lodges cost, and which have a swimming pool?

Bwindi lodges span luxury, midrange and budget tiers, but exact lodge rates and pool availability by name are not stated, so budget from the tour prices below and confirm amenities at booking.

Prices are the biggest gap in public information, so here is what you can rely on.

What you can price with confidence

Lodge room rates per night are not stated by the park or operators in visible material, so ask each lodge or your operator for current rates. What is published is the permit and the packaged tour prices. A gorilla tracking permit in Bwindi or Mgahinga costs $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, $500 for visitors from the rest of Africa and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens, according to Uganda Wildlife Authority. For comparison, a Rwanda permit in Volcanoes National Park costs $1,500 per person.

Packaged tours bundle lodge, transfers and often the permit. Current examples on this site range from $300 for a day trip from Kigali with the permit extra, to $2,600 for a three-day trek with the Batwa Trail and Lake Bunyonyi.

What do travellers say about Bwindi lodges?

On Tripadvisor the top listed lodges in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge, Chameleon Hill Forest Lodge and Mahogany Springs.

Guest rankings favour the southern sectors, with Buhoma's two in-park lodges also widely reviewed.

Reading reviews the useful way

Filter reviews for recency and for mentions of the sector you will trek. Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge guests highlight eight stone and timber glass-fronted bandas facing the forest canopy, a Forest Spa, a tea processing tour and visits to Bwindi Community Hospital, and a family of gorillas visits the lodge regularly. Gorilla Forest Lodge photos on the Abercrombie and Kent page show the 10 suites after its overhaul.

Compare stays using the 8-Day Uganda Safari with Chimps, Gorilla Trekking and Queen Elizabeth if you want the lodge as part of a longer route.

How do I get to my Bwindi lodge?

Fly to Kihihi for Buhoma, roughly 90 to 120 minutes' drive away, or drive a full day from Entebbe or Kampala, and use Kigali as the fastest gateway for the southern sectors.

Transfers shape which sector is realistic for your dates.

Air and road options

Twice daily scheduled flights land at Kihihi airstrip for Buhoma. By road, Buhoma is a full day's drive from Entebbe or Kampala. From Kigali, the southern sectors are far closer, which is why several short packages start there, including the 1-Day Bwindi Gorilla Tour from Kigali (Permit Extra), the From Kigali: 2-Day Gorilla Trek in Bwindi (Permit Extra) and the 2-Day Uganda Gorilla Trek in Bwindi from Kigali, Permit Included.

Transfer times between sectors

Plan around these drive times when your permit and lodge do not match.

RouteDrive time
Buhoma to Rushaga3 hours or more on mountain roads
Ruhija to RushagaNot much quicker than Buhoma to Rushaga
Rushaga to NkuringoAbout 30 to 45 minutes
Kihihi airstrip to BuhomaAbout 90 to 120 minutes

How hard is gorilla trekking in Bwindi, and when is the best time to go?

Difficulty depends on the sector, with Nkuringo the steepest and success rates over 90 percent, and permits run out before rooms do in the busy months so book early.

Fitness and season both matter less than booking early.

Difficulty and season

Gorilla viewing success rates are over 90 percent and you get an hour with the gorillas once sighted. Nkuringo has the steepest trek, while Buhoma suits first timers. The exact best months are not stated in the operator material, but the busy months sell out permits first, so lock the permit before anything else.

The 3-Day Uganda Gorilla Trek and Batwa Experience from Entebbe or Kampala and the From Kigali: 1-Day Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga, Uganda (Permit Extra) show how tight a booking window can look in practice.

Bwindi Lodge FAQ

How hard is gorilla trekking in Bwindi?

It varies by sector. Nkuringo has the steepest trek and Buhoma suits first timers. Success rates are over 90 percent and you get an hour with the gorillas once sighted, so most fit travellers complete the day.

What is the best time of year to see gorillas in Uganda?

A best month is not stated in the operator material, but in the busy months permits run out before rooms do, so secure the permit first and build the lodge around it.

How much does a gorilla tour cost in Uganda?

Packaged tours on this site run from $300 per person for a 1-day trek from Kigali with the permit extra up to $2,600 per person for a three-day trek with the Batwa Trail and Lake Bunyonyi. The permit alone costs $800 for foreign non-residents, per Uganda Wildlife Authority.

How much does Gorilla Forest Lodge cost?

Room rates for Gorilla Forest Lodge are not stated. It has 10 suites and is the only luxury lodge inside the park gates, so expect top-tier pricing and confirm rates directly with the lodge or your operator.

Which Bwindi lodges have a swimming pool?

Swimming pool availability by lodge is not stated in public lodge and park material, so list pools as a question for each lodge when you enquire. Do not assume one based on tier.

What happens if my lodge is in a different sector from my permit?

The trek starts at your permit sector's briefing point around 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning and rangers do not move you to another sector on the day. Buhoma to Rushaga takes three hours or more, so either change the lodge or accept a very early start.

How many nights should I stay before a trek?

Overnighting in Bwindi the night before tracking is required, so one night before the trek is the minimum. Staying at or near your trailhead, as at Buhoma Lodge a short walk from the meeting point, removes transfer risk.
